Definition: Fictional characters created to represent the goals, behaviors, and characteristics of a real group of users. A tool for keeping specific user types in mind throughout product development.

Personas are fictional characters created to represent the goals and behaviors of a real group of users. They put a human face on abstract user segments, helping teams make decisions with specific user types in mind.

What Makes a Good Persona

Effective personas are grounded in research, not assumptions. They typically include:

  • Demographics: Age, role, context
  • Goals: What they are trying to achieve
  • Behaviors: How they currently approach their tasks
  • Frustrations: Pain points and unmet needs
  • Context: Environment and constraints they operate within

Personas vs. Segments

The relationship is simple: a persona is a humanized representation of a segment. Some teams define distinct user segments without creating full personas; others create detailed persona documents. Whether you use formal personas or simply define distinct segments, the rules are the same—each represents a group with homogeneous needs.

The Danger of Persona Theater

Personas are only valuable if based on real research. Personas invented in a workshop based on assumptions can be worse than useless—they give false confidence that "we understand our users" when no actual user research has occurred.

The best personas are living documents, updated as new research reveals more about user needs and behaviors.
