Key Driver Analysis (KDA) is a quantitative technique used to identify which variables have the strongest relationship with an outcome of interest.

How It Works

KDA uses statistical methods (typically regression analysis) to determine which factors most strongly predict or "drive" a key metric. For example:

  • Which aspects of the product experience most strongly predict overall satisfaction?
  • What factors are most associated with customer churn?
  • Which touchpoints have the greatest impact on NPS?

The Quant-to-Qual Workflow

KDA is particularly powerful as a starting point for qualitative research. The workflow:

  1. Quantitative identification: Data science runs KDA on survey or behavioral data
  2. Statistical insight: Analysis reveals that "clarity of support response" is the #1 driver of satisfaction
  3. Qualitative exploration: UX research designs a study to understand what "clarity" actually means to users in context
  4. Actionable insight: Combined quant + qual provides both the "what" and the "why"

Example

A KDA on support ticket data might reveal that customer satisfaction is driven by:

  1. Clarity of proposed solution (strongest driver)
  2. Response time (moderate driver)
  3. Agent friendliness (weaker driver)

This statistical insight tells you where to focus, but not what "clarity" looks like in practice. That requires qualitative research to discover.
