Active Data Collection (also called Directed Research) is research you proactively design to investigate a specific question or hypothesis defined upfront. As the researcher, you control the process by carefully selecting participants and engaging them in a structured way to gather data that directly addresses your goals.
Characteristics of Active Collection
- Defined hypothesis: You have a question before you begin
- Controlled engagement: You select participants deliberately
- Structured method: Interviews, tests, or surveys with defined protocols
- A priori goals: The hypothesis exists before the research, not after
In formal terms, active data collection is how you test an a priori hypothesis—one you have defined before the research begins.
The Core Methods
The three Core Methods—UX Tests, User Interviews, and Surveys—are all forms of active data collection. You design the study, recruit specific participants, and engage them directly to answer your research question.
Active vs. Passive
Active data collection contrasts with Passive Data Collection, where data is generated by users without direct prompting (analytics, support tickets, social listening). Both are valuable:
- Active research investigates and explains specific questions
- Passive data reveals unexpected patterns and generates new hypotheses
The most effective research programs combine both. Passive data identifies what is happening ("70% drop-off on pricing page"); active research explains why ("users don't trust the checkout process").
